Some members of the deaf and interpreting community are upset at a couple of comedic spoofs of the sign language interpreters involved in the now famous Hurricane Sandy press conference that made sign language interpreter Lydia Callis an Internet and social media sensation.
Marlee Matlin has expressed objections to the latest spoof that recently opened the television show,Saturday Night Live. The skit mixed footage from the press conference with SNL parodies of Callis with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Christie’s appearance included a gum-chewing, over-the-top “interpreter.”
ABC4 reports that Matlin was offended by the skit. She expressed her feelings on Twitter.
"Millions of deaf people use sign (language). Why poke fun/fake it? Poke fun at ME but not the language.”
“I don't mind fun poked at me, as I poke back. But at the language, that millions use? It feels childish and insulting.”
"Here's my point. Deaf people HAVE a sense of humor... But faking signs that we use isn't the same. Imagine if a show started making fun of Spanish (using fake Spanish) or Japanese. Do you think they'd actually get away with it? Uh, no...”
